Maniac Melodic chorus!

Right well I said I would review a track and I was on the verge of doing Tim EP’s very very good untitled track but seen as this is a rock song I thought I could do this more justice.  And then I must admit I heard the first minute or so and I was going to hang fire.   BUT THEN – that chorus! Christ that took me by the seat of me pants and rose me on a euphoric crazy melodic trip! I knew then I would need to listen to this a few times!

I’ll say now the thing I love about this song is that chorus progression!

musical/track structure

Very diverse really, structure is quite original as loads is going on. The opening keys stand out and so does the bass when that comes in, as well as the airy lead guitar which sits over them.  I would say that right at the beginning of the track the instruments seem a little too apart namely the bass and the piano but that may be just me, when everything comes in it seems to fit together perfect.  The middle section with voice over samples give a good unique touch to the structure and the ending works brilliantly

Musical interest.

Had mine! Piano at the start always set me off.  I wasn’t sure about the twangy bass at first I didn’t think it mixed perfectly with the piano but when everything came in, it all sounded great – my first impression was power ballad! After that it was the chorus and singing which most excited me.

Melody

10 – for the chorus melody!! But ill give 9 overall, the chorus melody is superb, a little reminiscent of songs I think I’ve heard before but I don’t care.  It reminds me a little of ‘don’t fear the reaper’ but hey that’s cool.  The verses are full of great melody too and so is the guitar playing – but the ‘waiting to be criticised’ start, part and melody is as catchy and as cool as you can get in song writing.  I always love and write what I call ‘continuous melodies’ and they give me great satisfaction! Shit yea! I’m getting carried away!!

Musical performance and recording quality

All instruments are played greatly, the lead guitar riffs for me standing out through out amazing that these were played on a keyboard?  Call me a fuddy duddy but id prefer em played on a guitar tho (sorry)!  The piano playing is obviously accomplished.

As for recording quality this is a sound recording but for some reason there are elements which don’t seem to be BOB on!  I don’t know exactly what to advise as its just a small niggly feeling I get in some bits! Its indicative of computer based recording but I feel that certain parts with the intro and verses could be strengthened quality wise.  I’m not a massive fan of programmed drums in rock and think this would go to the top as a track with live drums. Theirs an 80’s theme for me running through the synth sounds throughout this track and that helps in the appreciation of the sound – especially in the chorus, where I have no quarms on quality what so ever.

Singing/Lyrics

The voice is great, very charismatic and interesting, bowie in places, famous Americans in others.  This is the kind of voice I go for in rock, it sounds a little abused like mine and if you rock that’s how it should be! However due to the occasional croak and maybe the delivery or mix it isn’t easy tomake out the lyrics – without REALLY trying! I don’t know if can do much about that but that would perhaps be a criticism.  After checking the lyrics – it’s a better experience.  The lyrics are epic and fit the music, don’t know if you’ll appreciate the comparison but they remind me of Hetfield and Ulrich lyrics from albums like ‘justice for all’. The rhyme is accomplished and message of the lyrics is dignified and powerful at the same time.

Overall – I was really glad to find this track, I must have listened to this over ten times now! The chorus and vocal performance are just brill and right up my alley! The overall sound could be improved but that the same for all of us, at the end of the day – the more we spend the better the recording quality and the top end can cost hundreds of thousands.

You have a great voice and this is brilliant song writing.

Highly recommended.
