This is my first encounter with Virginiaflame.  The song in question is “Say About Me”.  She is in the category of contemporary acoustic, solo performer and songwriter.  Now that the preliminaries are out of the way...

This is a very simple piece.  Just Virginiaflame’s voice, guitar, and what sounds like a recorder in the background that occasionally shows up to add some color.  The melody is basic, but very pretty and very soothing.  I like her voice.  Very folky.  It has a lilting and silky quality that’s not strong, but is perfect for the music.  This song is introspective from the singer’s standpoint, but the overall effect of the song, from how the music works as a whole, almost has a healing effect.  I know at the end of the day, this is the kind of music that makes you want to relax and drink a glass of wine and absorb the music.  The production, such as it is, is very good.  The vocals and the guitar have just the right balance.  The recorder in the background gives the song a tribal aspect.  The lyrics are well done.  The narrative about a woman at odds with herself has a nice hook with the recurring “what does it say about me” that starts the verses and ties the whole work together.  Some artists are too wordy in getting their point across.  Not Viginiaflame. She uses a call and response technique that helps her land the message without beating the listener over the head to do it.  Others could learn from her.

Overall, this song is very well done.  It has space and beauty.  I’m looking forward to hearing more of Virginiaflame’s music.  It is a very nice change of pace.  Good job.
