SlimFatGirl is an artist who signed up to the list from MP3 Unsigned and - as I'm still a relative newbie over there - I don't know that many of the artists over there. Like Soundclick, it has some fine examples of independent musicianship such as Virus (review coming up) Crockmister and the very wonderful Alexis Van Eeckhout. Here's hoping SlimFatGirl gets to join them eh? She boasts an impressive array of mentions on her website from Featured Track of The Day on Garageband.com, a some radio specials and some magazine coverage but - as always - does the music walk the walk?
We had some mixup over links so I ended up with two SFG tracks; the one mentioned at the top of this review and What's a Girl Supposed to Do. In a way, I'm glad that this was the case because of the nature of the tracks involved. Reach Out For Your Life is very eastern in feel, beautifully produced and a very nice piece of musical craft indeed. The mix of vocals on this sometimes remind me of Enya (only a little, honest) but back up the main (male) vocal perfectly. That is where I am glad I have two SFG tracks because I don't feel this is really SFG's track - as good as it undoubtedly is. The ID tag states this is from 'Joseph Gray's Album' and hearing this I think I'll be checking that gentleman out in his own right.
Where Reach Out shows me that SFG is a pretty competent vocalist, that alone isn't really enough to blow up my jaded skirts. What's a Girl Supposed to Do provides that essential ingredient for me; the lady on lead vocals itself. Where Reach Out is a decent blend of several genres, this track sticks firmly to it's jazzy roots as is all the better for it. Especially when you factor in that very sweet vocal tone SGF applies to the task. Think a subtler Sade and you wouldn't be far from the kind of sound this track swims in. Nothing like as production conscious as Reach Out, What's A Girl still stands up well by itself. An intriguing track and another female singer it may be worthwhile to keep your eyes open for..
