My review of the artist formally known as dj redshirt now the Redshirt Theory
Track Blue mind in a red state
First off a small but very informal discussion J
Mr Redshirt and I are kinda in a love hate relasanship
I hate him he loves me J
That will do now for the review
The into is really cool to this track, very trippy & haunting. really good use of filters
For an intro it builds really well. Then the introductions of the kick drum as a small tease to the beats. Which 2 be fair are a trade mark red, most his tracks have cool beats. all have a kinda prodigy sound 2 them, which is nothing he hides. The synth choices are of a high standard will all redshirts music, which is something I can never fault. He always use really nice synth sounds. There is a sound to my ears that sound like a muted trumpet? It’s probably a sax but to my untrained ears it sounds very much like a muted trumpet. The build quality to this track is very good. it builds and builds and every stage gets better
The voice pad is very tasteful. Again red don’t fail in his sound choice department
I remember a wile back red uploaded a live track this track reminds me very much of that track. I think it’s the filters not sure because I haven’t played that track for a wile and to be fair I can’t remember what it was called to go check, or am I just been lazy?
The track is really easy 2 follow it don’t really have any parts that are hard 2 work were its going. That’s not a bad thing cos this kinda track needs a certain amount of steady flow.
The addition of the piano is of the highest standard for me I love how it teases @ first and then goes in to a more flow of melody in the later part. There aint really much not to like about this track wait hold on……….. Yeah not much @ all
Im gonna have a bit of a constructive part to this review cos im sure red could just go read his comment box if he wants to hear all the good things and that is rightly so cos this is a really good track
Anyways as red will already know my pet hate with electronica is the level issues
We have had many talks over pm about it. Well not many but a few and always taken well so I feel like I can address it with out a come back. Not that red would
The recording levels on this and some of reds tracks I have issues with. Mainly cos I like to play my dance music loud and when your levels are 0.0 db your gonna get distortion and not the kind that makes songs the kind that make the quality not as Sharpe
The mastering side of things is the only part of reds music where I can say average. The rest is always of the highest standard J
Don’t know if anyone feels like they need to go check hand books and technical websites out and tell you how it’s supposed to be done. I never feel the need myself I let my ears do that for me. What im trying to say is in most cases you can look @ an mp3s and say that something aint right even before you press play. the shape tells a good enough story
Lots of fuzziness in the wav shapes, not having flat top and bottom, but kind spiky is the only way I can describe it. I don’t have the technical terms for that sorry but im sure if you read the right forums and websites you will find out.
So to end the review a top track by one the best electronica artists on this site and many other sites no doubt. A guy who could make a name for himself in the real world, not just the unsigned world. He probably just needs that lucky break like lots of other artists in the same predicament. Who knows for me if I was a major record label I would probably pass
Not for the lack of musical ability cos that’s plain to see a great musician and remixer.
Just I would be looking for something more original. We already have a chemical brothers and a prodigy and a crystal meths and to me red has a part of each of these artists.
Dance music is very mass production and a lot of people say dance music all sounds the same. To me it’s going to do if labels keep signing the same kinda artists. That aint a dig @ all, im just saying for me dance music lost its edge in the marketing side because everything was sounding the same and everyone was trying to be the next prodigy. I love the prodigy but do I really wanna hear two? For me probably not, I love tool but I wouldn’t wanna hear 2 tools lol sorry anyways gr8 artist fun guy even if he is American. A very likeable chap and can give as good as he takes and always takes it on the chin
Me and red like to cut each other just for fun J
Good work Mr Redshirt top track and good luck with the album J
