Rock and blues with an edge and a hook.

BLACK AND BLUE (Rock)

Artist Comments
This song was inspired by an article I heard on the radio about female on male domestic violence. Apparently this is an increasing trend and men take something like ten times longer to report violence. The Police tend not to take these cases seriously while if the man retaliates, he is often viewed as being the aggressor. I thought it was an interesting subject for a song and before I'm accused of distortion, I consider all domestic violence unacceptable and damaging, in particular to the children who are often forced to witness the two people they love most trying to destroy each other. The track is like a musical punch up which stumbles from one end of the ring to the other. I wanted to do something with a big riff in it and which had space for a guitar solo.

As Guitar Magazine is never likely to do it, I thought I'd take this opportunity to interview myself.

Who are you're all time favourite artists?

Mmmmmmm.Judging by my cd collection, I've bought more by Frank Zappa ( how much did he do!!!), Steely Dan, Miles Davis and of course the Beatles than any other artists. I also have a soft spot for Family, Stevie Wonder, Hendrix, The Doors, Mahavishnu Orchestra,Randy Newman and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Any new stuff?

I listen to lots of new bands and there is some great music about. Black Keys are my favourite new band at the moment and I saw them live a couple of times last year. The Bad Plus are really interesting. Anyone who can do a jazz version of Iron Man deserves respect.

What have you got in the car at the moment?

Big Audio Dynamite, Kasabian, Beatles and a blues compilation.

Who was the last act you saw live?

Paul Weller in Glasgow, I'm not a fan but he was excellent.

Favorite movies?

Cinema Paradiso... Dirty Harry....Bullitt...Groundhog Day....Silent Running....Groundhog Day......Grou..... .

Are you reading a book at the moment?

Birdsong. It is about the Somme...not many laughs. I recently read Michael Moore's Stupid White Men and Love all the People, the collected works of Bill Hicks.

How did you come to be putting stuff on mp3unsigned?

Through school and college I payed the local circuit of pubs and clubs in the north east of England. Contemporaries were people like Brian Johnson of AC-DC, Brian Ferry and Sting (who my band took over a residency from when he went off to London). When I left college we got a recording contract with Vertigo. During that time we were rubbing shoulders with Mark Knopfler, Bob Geldof, Sex Pistols, Rush, all sorts of amazing people. As is often the way in the Biz, the album we produced was never released and we were dumped. I went into a prolonged huff and didn't pick up a guitar for years. I can't be bothered with playing live but the web has given me a reason to write songs again so here I am. What gear do you use? I record on to a Yamaha AW4416 hard disk recorder before I put it through Sound Forge. I've got my trusty Gibson ES335, a Takamine acoustic, Korg X3 synth and Roland TD8K V drums. I'll use any other gadgets or toys I can get my hands on. I have a studio in my loft and when I'm in there, its like a womb....my music womb.

Any collaborators?
