LIVING ALONE

The talk swirled around this town,
They were bound to knock you down.
They said, “That girl is the cheating kind!”
I didn’t pay them any mind.

But I soon found out it was true,
Everything I’d ever heard about you.
Now, I can go on living a lie,
Or I can go on living alone.

We started out in summer sunshine,
I thought your heart beat with mine.
I really did believe that we had it all,
But all too soon came the fall.

I raced down to the lonely beach,
The only place still in reach,
And, as the tide pulled away from the shore,
I watched a big black bird
Writing in the sand.
And though it was a large ungainly hand,
I could plainly understand
That solitary word,
“Nevermore.”
