They say the only thing that remains the same is that things must change. Music is no exception to this rule. In this instance, anyone whom has kept up with hip-hop and rap over the last 4 to 6 years would tell you there has been a passing of the torch of sorts, with the crown of rap exchanging hands from the north to the south. Since the emergence of crunk music in 2001, the south has produced a majority of hip hops new stars, i.e. T.I., Ludacris, Slim Thug, Mike Jones and the new def jam poster boy Young Jeezy. Just when you the thought odds at least by chance would have to be in the favor of one of the other coast to produce the next rap phenomenon, the south introduces one more artist to let you know, were just warming up. Enter GRAND PRIX, born Jonathan Johnson in Boston Mass. however raised in Jacksonville better known as Duval County, Florida. As a youngster GRAND PRIX spent his early years like any kid hanging out coming of age. To avoid getting caught up, GRAND PRIXs parents kept him involved in after school activities and playing sports. By the end of his senior year of high school GRAND PRIX came to realization that he was not going to obtain a football scholarship. Soon GRAND PRIX began exploring his other talents and interest. It would not be until GRAND PRIXs freshman year of college that he would realize his true passion for music when a friend brought PRIX to the studio for his first session. From that day on PRIX began the long road that is the artist. PRIX spent the next years further developing & honing his skills, the end result? An artist with the bassy voice of a Method Man plus a talent to play with words like a fabolous all combined with that classic soulful I am what I am wit of the southern artist. Im not a trap star like Jeezy or T.I., Im a regular n*gga that has good days and bad days, as far as my music is concerned, it is what it is! So if I feel like rapping about being in the club and poppin bottles, I will because I do that, and if I wanna rap about the state of the black union, I will, because I saw that too, I live that. What separates GRAND PRIX from the everyday MC in the current state of hip hop is his ability to draw from all 24 hours of the day that happens in life not just merely the 10-4 club and trap life hours that seem to be the only hours that dominate in rap. The end result is an artist that will be perceived by some as confused and contradictory or as an artist thats more in tune and representative of the real true life emotions of the day to day person. Prix however, leaves the argument of his skills and charisma up for far less debate with catchy phrases and his braggadocios swagger. As humble as it can be said, I got next GRAND PRIX. With the confidence of a champ and the intelligence of the coach of a champ GRAND PRIX is surely a train with a final destination of success.
