Since then I've signed them up for all sorts of internet related stuff, from viagra to newsletters about parrots.

This is just one of the scams there are out there.

1. There is no such thing as a major independent; there are four major labels (previously 5 before two merged), Universal, Sony BMG, EMI and Warner - the others are independent, it maybe a big indie label but cant be a major and an independent.

2. It would likely to have an "Inc.", "Ltd.","Corp.","LLP","Plc","GMBH" somewhere at the end or state %Record Label Name% is a trading name of %Company Name%.

3. would state their company registration number if applicable and VAT registration

4. Would state their address such as Registered Office or Branch: PO Boxes aren't a proper address.

5. Large Corps always have an email policy notice to the bottom blabbing on about confidential, private and stuff, and intended for the proper addressee(s) only etc.

6. They want your music, they would have a telephone number so you could contact them straight away! They wouldnt force you to contact them, however, they wouldnt say at your earliest opportunity.

7. "CopRightsyright © 2003-2005. All Reserved." wouldnt be on the bottom of their website and wouldnt say "i Own ThiS sh*t biAtch so Dont MesS" when you click on it.

8. its big company so website would be professional designed! this one obviously isn't.

9. 99% of the time when "Regards" is the ending greeting its a scam - Also you never start an email with regarding (you may have RE: in subject line though, thats the only exception)

10. Labels would be precised to what they want..."materials" is very general, it doesnt even signify if its a musical element, sounds like they want the whole website

11. These unsigned websites dont belong to you so its not "your website"

12. 98% of the time, the emailer (from a label) would introduce themselves, then explain a paragraph about their label..before even going into details.

13. "Statue is a major independent record company and would like to discuss the possibility of
releasing this material and doing some radio promotion on it." - Why is an "and" used?

It would be like this (this is short because im in a hurry so would be longer) .. "Label name is an Independent record label based in Place, Country who specialise in Genre and Another genre music. We are interested...".

You telling me any record label will release a track into the charts without any promotion such as Radio? No, regardless of how good the music is, it wouldnt sell. Radio is the minimum promotion possibly you can do.

14. Never pay any amount to a record label, an agency (which also could be a scam) might require subscription fees etc. a record label wont, in fact record labels normally pay the artist prior to them getting any revenue from their sales, where i come from these are called "Advances".

15. If something seems to good to be true, it probably is.

16. If a label is interested in signing you or licensing your tracks then they would arrange to meet you, come on guys n gals how can u sign a record contract or agreement wid a keyboard?? :S

17. What record label would SPAM artists? Which also happens to be illegal aswell as annoying?

It wouldnt be a template message. Even though unsigned artists seem to be the ones chasing labels for a deal,  the email wouldnt be short, the label has to try and sell themselves to you, for all they know you might be negotiating with other labels and almost closing the deal, the message you have to get across to the unsigned artist is PICK US!. Similar the other way round when you are like PICK ME!
