Calling Marvin reminds a Rock fan how good this music can really get. Local musicians Cole Garlak, Marcus Ross, Dan Bickel and Dave Humphreys are the next leaders in the Detroit music scene with their sensitive and intelligent lyrics set to engaging and emotional instrumentals. Their newest recording showcases original music reminiscent of the Classic Rock sounds of the past with a unique twist. With layered guitars and vocals paired with a strongly-defined rhythm section, Calling Marvin’s songs call out to the ear and the soul of the Rock music lover. Ever since high school, Cole Garlak and Marcus Ross have been making music together. They started in school jazz and marching bands, then graduated to sneaking into infamous Detroit punk rock clubs like Bookie’s and Blondie’s with their punk/metal outfits. Garlak and Ross, have always had enough conventional musical background and vision to establish their other projects as credible and interesting. Anchoring the rhythm section, drummer Ross has also expanded his expertise with other genres by performing with local Country, Blues, and Motown artists. Garlak has been playing guitar and writing songs since age seven, but just took over lead vocal duties in 1995. A talented guitarist-think: David Gilmore and Paul Weller-Garlak’s voice also works well with his playing style-think: a little rough around the edges, with lots of depth and ability to convey emotion. Calling Marvin is the best and brightest Garlak and Ross collaboration that reveals the best work from both artists. Dan Bickel was the missing musical link for Garlak and Ross and completes the final line-up for Calling Marvin. Coming from a musical family, this multi-instrumentalist is currently performing as bassist, along with providing additional vocals that co-create the rich harmonies you hear on Marvin’s latest disc. Along with a diverse array of professional gigs, Bickel is also known for his work with Huckleberry Groove, the funky horn band from East Lansing. The debut Marvin disc, Eye Sore, (with former member John Kirn on bass) was good for a freshman effort by Garlak and Ross, but their newest effort with Bickel solidifies their sound. Recorded by Big Chief and Kid Rock producer, Al Sutton, stand-out tunes from the new album include Hand in Your Back Pocket, Dusty, and Say It. These songs show the band’s growth as a group, as well as their wide array of musical experiences and influences, bringing a tenacious quality to their sound. They reach into Roots and subsequent Rock recordings for inspiration, to make classicly-inspired modern and uncommonly fresh new music. "This disc "12 spiders a year is different [than Eye Sore]…we are more mature and developed…more Bluesy and soulful…Dan adds a strong R&B vibe and the melodies are bolder… we are really consistent now," says Garlak about Marvin’s sophmore release. Consistent is right-listen for Calling Marvin as they deliver one of the best records Detroit has seen in a while.
